Baby’s First Dungeon
Good news! Though it’s been a few (busy) weeks, I have finally come to the end of the Modular Dungeon portion of my Blender learning.
If you are new here, I have been following Gamedev.tv’s Complete Blender Creator: Learn 3D Modelling for Beginners through udemy. The first portion of the course was a basic introduction and walkthrough of Blender’s tools in which we (the students) follow alongside the instructor to create a low-poly lighthouse scene. The secondary course walked us through creating a modular dungeon; getting users ready to utilize dimensions, structures, and snapping.
Now, I have to say, I was rather surprised and impressed with myself while following this portion of the course. I found myself getting more used to the controls and functionality of Blender, something I thought would take much longer as I work frequently in Adobe programs and the shortcut keys are quite different. That being said, there were still moments in which I needed to rewind to regain my bearings, but for the majority of this module, I felt more comfortable freestyling a bit.
Out of all the steps that went into creating my dungeon, I really enjoyed creating different types of pillars using mirror modifiers as well as the bisect & bevel tools. Creating notches struck into the pillars felt like giving the dungeon a personality and history.
As I have been learning in Blender, I’ve been remembering the fun that I had while attending design school. Despite any frustrations, I have always loved to learn whatever I can. Tucking away a new skill into the utility belt is powerful and allows me to explore being creative in new ways. So, I went ahead and got a few more courses (yes, in addition to the others I’ve already mentioned…) to follow to not only continue building my Blender skills but learning more about game design in general. Stay tuned for future updates - low-poly dinosaur is next up for Blender!
